The constant Buzz of a Drone

On the altana of Palazzo Querini at Ca' Balà (Dorsoduro 245, Venice)—a quintessential Venetian rooftop terrace—Palazzo Bentivoglio is launching the first episode of ‘extra BENTIVOGLIO’ with British artist Jeremy Deller. This spin-off initiative brings the activities developed within the historic Bologna building out into the world. 'The constant Buzz of a Drone' is a site-specific intervention visible to those passing through the surrounding area, from the Ponte de Ca’ Balà, from the Giudecca, and, most notably, from the Redentore church. For many years, Deller has used the language of advertising signage as his primary means of expression, working with slogans, archives, found texts, and actions in public spaces. In his hands, banners—historically used in demonstrations and political campaigns by unions, parties, movements, and associations—become direct tools and explicit statements. The banner was created as a gesture of solidarity with the victims of all contemporary conflicts, evoking that sound—the buzz of a drone—which for many is the last thing they will ever hear.
